ECDIS - Learn All About Electronic Chart Display and Information System

As per Chapter V regulation 19, all ships need to carry nautical publications and charts for the planning and displaying of ship’s route. Ships also need to continously monitor and plot the positions throughout the journey. However, every ship also needs to carry electronic chart display and informationsystems Ecdis UPS in case there is some power distortion or blackout.

ECDIS

With the development of ECDIS system, the aspect of navigation is now simpler, faster and sleeker. This system utilises the GPS to locate the navigational points successfully. Due to the incorporation of highly reliable GPS technology, one can’t doubt the reliability and utility of ECDIS as a naval electronic chart system. To further add points towards its trustworthiness, make note it adheres to the regulations and conditions set by International Maritime Organization.

In addition to GPS, ECDIS also use Radar and AIS system to provide a better navigational application. It also integrates Electronic Navigational Charts system to display navigational routes.

Types of ECDIS

Following are two types of ECDIS and both are utilized in different marine sectors:
  • Vector ECDIS - It is mainly utilized by government naval vessels. It follows all the norms stated by International Hydrographic Organization. It has pre-programmed feature to show any threat to the vessel’s location if other ships are also at a similar site in the water
  • Raster ECDIS - Raster chart is basically a visual scan of the navigational paper chart. It Raster ECDIS, paper navigational charts are firstly scanned and later converted into the format of Electronic Chart System. The processes of conversion make the task of zoom in and zoom out of a navigational location or route quite feasible and easy. The technology of RCDS (Raster Chart Display System) can also be used in place of Electronic Navigational Charts.
The technology of ECDIS is gaining more and more popularity these days. By adopting this method of charting and marking of navigational routes, there are fewer chances of unwanted accidents. This technology is more reliable and efficient than human aid.

Nowadays, all ship companies are using ECDIS as a navigational electronic chart system to get better navigation routes and to detect naval treat.
